Historical Description

Georges Braque Oiseaux Fulgurants (Dazzling Birds) from Lettera Amorosa, 1963 was created to accompany Rene Char’s book of love letters. From an important series that occupied the artist for several years, this mesmerizing work is filled with soaring birds, an image of freedom, joy and movement. Two giant  birds appear to meet each other in the sky, their wings outspread. Their head touch, perhaps in the act of kissing. Both birds are colored in a deep, crimson red which emphasizes the passion and energy in flight. The background is formed by subtle shades of yellow, brown and beige. Such colors contrast remarkably well against the brightness of the birds. Looking closer, textural quality of the wings allows the birds to appear as if their feathers are rippling in the wind. Charmingly framing this natural scene is a bright red circle, quickly bringing the two birds to the viewers’ attention. This richly colored work is a mesmerizing addition to any collection.

Created in 1963, this color lithograph on Arches paper with an Arches watermark is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right; numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left; published by Edwin Engelberts, Geneva and printed by Mourlot, Paris.
