Historical Description

Georges Braque Migration, 1972 is from a theme that has occupied the artist for several years. Primarily, this work features a soaring bird, an image of freedom, joy and movement. Dreamy hues of blue and brown unfold before the viewers’ eyes in this abstract piece. Like many of Braque’s other works, this image explores the concept of flight. Yet, Braque never clearly defines the subject in this case. As we look closer, the central figure slowly resembles a person in flight, their arms and legs outstretched against a richly colored blue sky. Below this floating form are dark wave like patterns which subtly illustrate a vast ocean. This provoking illustration of a figure traversing across sky and sea to reach their final destination is both an artistic and literal depiction of immigration. The contrasting light and dark colors portray immigration to be a joyful liberation as the figure escapes darkness to join a clear blue sky. The wave-like patterns also add a decorative quality to an already beautiful work.

Created in 1962, this color etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 30 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Maeght, Paris.
