Historical Description

Georges Braque L’Echo (The Echo), 1960 is a typically wonderful Braque composition and still-life. This work features a flat composition that intersects with Braque’s explorations of cubism. Here we see a table veiled in a deep red table cloth upon which is placed a creamy yellow pitcher and to the right a grey bird flies over the table carrying a piece of paper that reads ‘L’ECHO’. Braque uses a understated color palate as in many of his other still-lives. Notes of brighter blue in the wall behind the table are stand out moments of color in this work, as well as some red tiles off to the right of the table.

By bringing a creature full of motion directly into his still-life, Braque is providing the viewer with interesting context. While the rest of the scene is still and tranquil, the diving bird breaks up this stagnancy and adds vivid and exciting motion. But the colors of the bird are harmonious with the colors of the room and though it is full of movement, it still fits eloquently within the overall still-life.

Created in 1960, this lithograph on cream Arches paper is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 300 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Maeght, Paris.
