Historical Description

Georges Braque Le Canard (The Duck), 1961 brings forth another wonderful example of Braque’s love for birds. Braque was particularly interested in the theme of flight in his works surrounding birds- he depicts them roaming the sky, often in abstract terms. The depictions heave with emotion and movement. The work is simple and elegant, composed only with light, sky blue, white and black. The black and bright blue stand out against the white outline of the duck which is flying from darkness into the light. Not only is this metaphorically touching, but hearkens to the passage of time. The wing stretches out, showing the movement of the bird across the canvas. The work contains the essential features of a Braque piece such as the simplicity in space, flattened form and rigorous color selection. Braque sought balance and harmony in his compositions and this work is no exception.

Created in 1961, this color lithograph with hand-coloring is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. A unique proof with hand-applied watercolor over lirthograph inscribed ‘Epreuve d’ essai’ in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 75 color lithographs with embossing,  printed by Tirage Guillard, Paris and published by Au Vent d’Arles.
