Historical Description

Athena the Greek goddess of war, art and wisdom is the subject of this alluring work, Georges Braque Athênê (Athena), 1932. Braque illustrates her on the left, a nude figure boldly riding on her horse-drawn chariot. Her body is formed by flowing lines, that curve around to detail her calves, torso, and face. Athena stands tall and strong, gripping the reins as she commands attention of the viewer, as well as what other actors are present in her scene. The scene is dramatic as the horse raises its hoofs as if in battle. According to Vallier “this lithograph, pulled by Berdon rue de l’Orient in Montmarte, was considered by Braque as one of the most important he had ever done (Vallier, 30).” Braque wondrously melds classical Greek iconography into modernity, paying equal tribute to classical depictions of the Grecian gods and his own modern style. This skillfully colored work is sure to please the eye and the mind.

Created in 1932 this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. This work is numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower right margin; printed by Berdon, Paris.
