Frank Stella Moby Dick from The Waves, Unique Color Trial Proof, 1989 is ornate and vibrant in color, texture, and space. This particular work is very unique because he decided to use the remaining plates and collage elements to produce further hand-painted arrangements. The colors are strong and iridescent at the same time but what is most magnificent about this work lies in its amazing synchronization of all elements. Starkly different than the numbered impressions within the edition, this particular color trial proof is brighter and edgier. Although the edition contains darker coloring near the bottom margin, this work depicts luminous marbling that pools, creating a sense of depth. Distinct are the hints of yellows and neon green added into smaller regions. The fluorescent pinks completely immerse your vision while the fading black outlines stabilize all the varying hues. In such a chaotic scene, Stella manages to control the different shapes and forms. There is an illusion of electric speed and depth that extends the feeling of tactility along the surface. You are immediately drawn to the curvaceous lines that provide contour to the shape of the whale’s tail in the center. It swirls around, capturing our attention. Truly a remarkable print, Frank Stella brings forth an aesthetically beautiful unique work of art.
