Just what type of place is Libertina? Evidently, it is a place of Stella’s vivid imagination. Yet, each viewer can make it their own by reacting differently to the vibrant shapes and colors. The chaotic appearance disrupts visual order. In this graphic work, grids and lines are twisted and bent in numerous ways; bright colors are meshed and layered together. Viewing this, we cannot discern a recognizable form but we easily discern feelings of joy and excitement when we are confronted with this piece. We can now imagine that the world of Libertina is a lively and disruptive force which upends human desire for order and welcomes the imagination.

Created in 1995 and published by Tyler Graphics, New York, this color relief, screen print, etching , aquatint, lithograph and engraving on TGL handmade paper is hand- signed and dated in pencil by Frank Stella (Massachusetts, 1936 -) in the lower left of the image. This work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left; aside from the numbered edition of 12 artist’s proofs.
