Historical Description

David Hockney’s Slow Rise, 1993 is a vibrant and captivating work filled with the brilliant color, movement, and playful sense of space that make Hockney’s work so distinctive.

Sweeping forms, expressive marks, and saturated passages of color seem to shift and unfold across the composition, creating a work that feels energetic, sophisticated, and continually engaging. Part of Hockney’s Some More New Prints series, Slow Rise reflects his fascination with challenging traditional perspective and finding new ways to capture the experience of seeing and moving through space.

Created as an original lithograph and screenprint in colors on Arches 88 wove paper, Slow Rise was produced in collaboration with Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, one of America’s most important print workshops. The combination of lithography and screenprinting allowed Hockney to layer transparent and opaque colors, patterns, and gestural elements to achieve the work’s unusually rich surface and depth.

A special proof of Slow Rise is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., providing important museum recognition for the work. This example is hand-signed and dated by David Hockney in pencil, numbered from the limited edition of only 68, and bears the Gemini G.E.L. blindstamp. Combining exceptional color, a small edition, distinguished printmaking, and museum representation, Slow Rise is an especially compelling example of Hockney’s celebrated graphic work.
