Historical Description

David Hockney, Going Out, from Some New Prints, 1993, is one of the most energetic and visually complex works from David Hockney’s Some New Prints series. Created in 1993 and published the following year, the composition transforms suggestions of the California landscape into an imaginative arrangement of interlocking shapes, brilliant color, and layered texture. Rather than describing a specific location, Hockney creates an abstract environment that captures the sensation of movement through space.

During the early 1990s, Hockney returned to America and began exploring landscape through a freer and increasingly abstract visual language. In Some New Prints, recognizable natural forms are broken apart and reconstructed through overlapping planes, rhythmic patterns, and bold contrasts. The series allowed Hockney to continue his long-standing investigation of perspective while giving color and gesture a more independent role.

In Going Out, sweeping arcs and angular planes overlap across the composition, creating a dense visual rhythm. Areas of vivid red, blue, yellow, green, turquoise, and black are filled with stripes, dots, scratches, and brush-like marks, giving every section its own surface and direction. The forms appear to twist, rise, and push against one another, suggesting hills, roads, and changing terrain without becoming a literal landscape. The result is unmistakably Hockney: colorful, inventive, playful, and constantly in motion.

Works from Hockney’s early 1990s period are valued for combining his celebrated use of brilliant color with a more abstract and experimental approach to space. Within Some New Prints, Going Out is particularly memorable for its compact intensity, layered patterns, and balance between organic curves and sharply defined geometry. With a standard edition of only 68, signed impressions remain limited and highly desirable.

Produced in collaboration with the master printers at Gemini G.E.L., Going Out is a color lithograph and screenprint on Arches 88 wove paper. Published by Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles in 1994, the work bears the publisher’s blindstamp and inkstamp on the reverse. The full sheet measures approximately 24¼ by 27 inches, while the combination of lithography and screenprinting creates a rich contrast between layered color, graphic patterns, and expressive marks.

Museum Collections:

The significance of Going Out is reflected by its inclusion in the permanent collection of:

National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Its presence in this prestigious institution underscores the importance of Some New Prints and Hockney’s innovative contributions to late twentieth-century abstraction, landscape, and printmaking.

This example, numbered from the limited edition of only 68 and hand signed and dated by David Hockney, represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the artist’s most distinctive abstract landscape prints. An additional 14 artist’s proofs were produced outside the standard edition. Combining rarity, technical complexity, exceptional craftsmanship, and a highly recognizable palette, Going Out is an important work for serious collectors of modern and contemporary art.

David Hockney’s Some New Prints series, created between 1993 and 1994, marks an important shift toward abstraction in his printmaking. Using vivid color, layered textures, organic shapes, and energetic patterns, Hockney created imaginative compositions that move between landscape, interior space, and pure abstraction. Produced with Gemini G.E.L. through combinations of lithography and screenprinting, the series explores movement, depth, and visual rhythm while preserving the spontaneity of drawing and painting.

The works in David Hockney’s Moving Focus Series (1984–1986) include: Slow Forest, Ink in the Room, Four Part Splinge, Blue Hang Cliff, Going Out, Warm Start.
