Historical Description

David Hockney, Blue Hang Cliff, from Some New Prints, 1993, is one of the most vivid and structurally complex works from David Hockney’s Some New Prints series. Created during a period of renewed abstraction in his career, the composition transforms the suggestion of a rocky landscape into an energetic arrangement of color, texture, and movement. Rather than depicting a recognizable location, Hockney constructs an imagined environment that shifts between landscape and pure abstraction.

During the early 1990s, Hockney became increasingly interested in compositions where color and gesture could define space without relying on conventional perspective. The works in Some New Prints developed alongside his abstract paintings of the period, allowing him to explore how overlapping forms, layered surfaces, and contrasting patterns could create depth and movement within a flat image.

In Blue Hang Cliff, sweeping blue, green, yellow, pink, orange, and black forms overlap across the composition. Curved shapes suggest cliffs, vegetation, flowing water, and changing terrain, while densely patterned surfaces give each section a distinct texture. The forms appear to rise, fold, and press against one another, creating an image that feels both carefully organized and constantly in motion. The result is unmistakably Hockney: colorful, imaginative, experimental, and visually engaging.

Works from Hockney’s early 1990s period are valued for combining his celebrated use of brilliant color with an increasingly abstract visual language. Within Some New Prints, Blue Hang Cliff is particularly recognizable for its layered composition, rich variety of marks, and balance between organic forms and bold graphic structure. With a standard edition of only 68, signed impressions remain limited and increasingly desirable.

Produced in collaboration with the master printers at Gemini G.E.L., Blue Hang Cliff is a 23-color lithograph and screenprint on Arches 88 wove paper. Published by Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles with its blindstamps and inkstamp on the reverse, the full sheet measures approximately 23 by 30 inches. The combination of lithography and screenprinting gives the composition a rich contrast between fluid drawing, layered textures, and sharply defined areas of color.

Museum Collections:

The significance of Blue Hang Cliff is reflected by its inclusion in the permanent collections of several important American museums, including:

National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Its presence in these respected institutions underscores the importance of Some New Prints and Hockney’s innovative contribution to late twentieth-century abstraction and printmaking.

This example, numbered from the limited edition of only 68 and hand signed and dated by David Hockney, represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the artist’s most distinctive abstract prints. An additional 14 artist’s proofs were produced outside the standard edition. Combining rarity, technical complexity, exceptional craftsmanship, and a highly recognizable palette, Blue Hang Cliff is an important work for serious collectors of modern and contemporary art.

David Hockney’s Some New Prints series, created between 1993 and 1994, marks an important shift toward abstraction in his printmaking. Using vivid color, layered textures, organic shapes, and energetic patterns, Hockney created imaginative compositions that move between landscape, interior space, and pure abstraction. Produced with Gemini G.E.L. through combinations of lithography and screenprinting, the series explores movement, depth, and visual rhythm while preserving the spontaneity of drawing and painting.

The works in David Hockney’s Moving Focus Series (1984–1986) include: Slow Forest, Ink in the Room, Four Part Splinge, Blue Hang Cliff, Going Out, Warm Start.
