Historical Description

Chic and simplistic, Damien Hirst Cocarboxylase, from 12 Woodcut Spots, 2010 is a vibrant and eye-catching grid of colored dots in a square field of white. Four columns by four rows of these dots rendered in several bight colors, methodically placed throughout the composition. Despite its joyful color palette, the work’s systematic arrangement gives it a clinical aura. This orderly quality is further suggested by the title of the piece, borrowed from the name of a molecular coenzyme in the catabolism of pryuvate. Cocarboxylase is a striking manifestation of Hirst’s exploration of color and experimentation with presenting them in an orderly, removed, yet undeniably beautiful way.

Created in 2010, this woodcut in Color on Somerset paper is hand signed by Damien Hirst (Bristol, 1965-) in pencil in the bottom right margin and is from the edition of 48; there were also 20 artist's proofs.
