Historical Description

Filled with whimsical figures, alternating stripes on the handle, and a symmetrical Greek inspired decoration at the base, this hand turned pitcher is a delightful original ceramic. In this instance, Picasso has utilized the red earthenware clay to create the illusion of a deductive decorative process, as the faces remain in the red clay. However, this is only an illusion, because the black engobe surrounds the faces and actually forms the decoration by becoming the background.

Created in 1963, this original Madoura red earthenware clay turned pitcher with engobe decoration (black) engraved by knife is from the edition of 300. This work is inscribed 'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside.
