Historical Description

Chic and simplistic, Damien Hirst’s Flumequine, 2007 is a vibrant and eye-catching grid of colored dots in a rectangular field of white. Nine columns and twelve rows of these dots rendered in bright colors from across the color wheel are methodically placed evenly throughout the composition. Despite its joyful color palette, the work’s systematic arrangement gives it a clinical aura. This orderly quality is further suggested by the title of the piece, borrowed from the name of a synthetic antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections . Flumequine, 2007  is a striking manifestation of Hirst’s exploration of color and experimentation with presenting them in an orderly, removed, yet undeniably beautiful way.

Created in 2007, this etching with aquatint in colors on Hahnemühle paper is hand-signed by Damien Hirst in pencil in the lower right image and numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil on the reverse.
