Historical Description

A bend in the River Creuse, located in the West of France, is depicted in Monet Ravain de la petite creuse (Gorge of the Petite Creuse), 1894. Hills rise to the left of the river, while a flat bank on the right holds some delicately drawn trees. There is a movement to the water, as it slowly churns around the corner. The hills, showing no signs of modern life, gently enclose this serene gorge. It looks quiet, as if you would be the only one to observe the bubbling movement of the river, and the whispering of the trees along the shore.

Created in 1894 after an original painting of the same title created in 1889, this color lithograph on chine appliqué on wove paper is hand-signed by Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926) in pencil in the lower left margin; also hand-signed by the engraver G. W. Thornley in pencil in the lower right margin. From an edition of 25 hand-signed proofs by both Claude Monet (Paris, 1840-Giverny, 1926) and G.W. Thornley; printed by Belfond & Cie and published by J. Mancini, Paris.
