Claude Monet La Gare Saint –Lazare, le train de Normandie (Arrival of the Normandy Train), 1894 is inspired by a period of time in 1877 when Monet lived in an apartment near Gare St. Lazare in Paris. This lithograph shows the romantic side of industry, but also feels real. The smoke billows up towards the ceiling of the station, and dark mobs of people walk to and fro between trains. The scene is shrouded in smoke, but also illuminated by the lampposts and open format of the train station.

Created in 1894 after an original painting of the same title created in 1877, this color lithograph on chine appliqué on wove paper is hand-signed by Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 – Giverny, 1926) in pencil in the lower left margin; also hand-signed by the engraver G. W. Thornley in pencil in the lower right margin. From an edition of 25 hand-signed proofs by both Claude Monet (Paris, 1840-Giverny, 1926) and G.W. Thornley; printed by Belfond & Cie and published by J. Mancini, Paris.
