Both sculptor and painter, Calman Shemi (Argentina, 1939 - ) created a medium that combines elements of both practices. His 'soft paintings' begin with a drawing in color to scale that is then recreated by layering many fabrics; with the help of a specialized, threadless sewing machine, artisans mesh the various textiles together. Escape Through a Side Door exemplifies the best of Shemi's works realized through this innovative technique. The soft painting's large scale, impression of transparency and exuberant patterns draw the viewer in for a meditative viewing experience. One thinks of Rothko's color field works or Matisse's vibrant style.
Created after an original maquette by the artist, this original soft painting bears a tag on the verso in lower right reading: "Calman Shemi | Escape Through a Side Door | Shemi." The work is hand signed in black ink on this tag, and bears the edition number 6. The artist's signature is also sewn into the front of the work.
