Historical Description

Both sculptor and painter, Calman Shemi (Argentina, 1939 - ) created a medium that combines elements of both practices. His 'soft paintings' begin with a drawing in color to scale that is then recreated by layering many fabrics; with the help of a specialized, threadless sewing machine, artisans mesh the various textiles together. Escape Through a Side Door exemplifies the best of Shemi's works realized through this innovative technique. The soft painting's large scale, impression of transparency and exuberant patterns draw the viewer in for a meditative viewing experience. One thinks of Rothko's color field works or Matisse's vibrant style.

Created after an original maquette by the artist, this original soft painting bears a tag on the verso in lower right reading: "Calman Shemi | Escape Through a Side Door | Shemi." The work is hand signed by Calman Shemi in black ink on this tag, and bears the edition number 6. The artist's signature is also sewn into the front of the work.
