Historical Description

Elegant and figural, Arman’s rendering of Venus emblematic of his style. Similar to traditional depictions of the goddess, this sculpture depicts her curvaceous form and delicate facial features. However Arman modernizes this image by splicing the sculpture such that it becomes a multidimensional experience. Of splicing his works, Arman has said “my interest is in exploring the various worlds of the object”. The textural quality of this work is remarkable as the intricate folds of the subject’s robe fuse with the sublime coloring of the bronze. The spaces created by the splicing allow the sculpture to blend delicately with its surroundings.

Created in 1990, this cast bronze sculpture with brown patina has the incised signature of Fernandez Arman (Nice, 1928 – New York, 2005) on the base of the sculpture and numbered from the edition of 100 with the stamp of the foundry ‘BRONZE ROMAIN BARLIER’.
