Historical Description

A wonderfully detailed and charismatic portrait, this exquisite work illustrates the technical mastery and artistic vision of Van Dyck. Adrien Van Stalbemt's stately yet approachable expression reflects Van Dyck's refined ability to comfort and relax his subjects, resulting in a realistic and acute portrait. Stalbemt was a South Netherlandish landscape painter and etcher. He often decorated his landscapes with various figures and animals in a clever way that led to his popularity. Aside from landscapes, he also painted religious, mythological, and allegorical scenes. Stylistically he is known for his meticulous brush technique and somewhat vibrant color palette. Van Dyck captures Stalbemt in a noble pose, head held high as he grabs his flowing garment with his left hand, a jeweled ring upon his left pinky finger. He has short hair, a long nose, and an ample moustache and is shown gazing off into the distance, a proud expression upon his face.

This portrait is a Mauquoy-Hendrickx State IV (of VII) engraved by Paulus Pontius (Antwerp, 1603 - Antwerp, 1658) in collaboration with Anthony van Dyck (Antwerp, 1559 - London, 1641) as part of his Iconographie series of engraved portraits of famous people at the time. The plate has been marked in the lower left of the plate "Ant. van Dyck pinxit" and beneath that "Paul. du pont fculp." Also marked "Mart. vanden Enden excudit Cum privilegio" in the lower right. Beneath the engraved portrait is the inscription: ADRIANVS STALBENT. This piece is printed on a fine paper with the Shield with Crown and Baton de Bale watermark (Mauquoy-Hendrickx no. 203), dating this piece to before 1645.
