Historical Description

Andy Warhol Beethoven, 1987 FS II.392 masterfully re-imagines the classical 19th century portrait of the composer, transforming it into a strikingly eye-catching pop-art piece that perfectly embodies Warhol’s bold creative vision. Beethoven’s figure and the paper in his hands take on fantastically colored hues and lively lines of sheet music sweep dramatically across the whole composition. Warhol was obsessed with all things celebrity and fame and this portfolio of portraits of the famous composer fits in seamlessly with his other works of famous people, like Marylin Monroe and Queen Elizabeth.

Created in 1987, this color screenprint on Lenox Museum Board is hand signed in pencil on verso by the executor of The Estate of Andy Warhol, the publisher, and the printer on a stamped certificate of authenticity. Printed by Jasen Smith, New York. Published by Hermann Wunsche, Bonn, Germany. Numbered from the edition of 60 in pencil on verso.
