Historical Description

Andy Warhol Muhammad Ali; Bowing his head in concentration, Warhol screenprint Muhammad Ali, 1978 depicts Muhammad Ali in a quiet moment to himself. He places Muhammad Ali against a deep, midnight blue background that contrasts nicely with the beige and black tones used to convey his subject. The dark and calming color of the blue contributes to the notion that Ali is deep in thought - either readying himself, or mediating on past moments. Warhol offers the viewer a raised vantage point, as if he or she is looking down at Ali in an instant prior to or after a boxing match. Muhammad Ali appears focused and controlled, as if ready to take on anything or anyone, and the viewer cannot help but admire his quiet stoicism in this private moment outside of the boxing ring.

Created in 1978, this piece is hand signed by Andy Warhol (1928-1987) in felt pen in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 150 in felt pen in the lower right (total edition of 150, 10 AP, and 1 PP). This work was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York and published by Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc., New York.
