Historical Description

Andy Warhol Grapes, 1979 FS II.190 is one of six screenprints in Warhol's Grapes portfolio. A few years prior to the creation of this series, in 1975, Warhol designed a label for famous French winery Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The winery invites an artist to create a label for them each year, as an exciting collaboration that breathes new life into the centuries-old brand. Inspired by this project, Warhol created six vibrant screenprints of different varieties of grapes. Grapes, 1979 FS II.190 colors a succulent bunch of grapes in fuchsia, with seafoam green leaves and vines. Warhol abstracts the composition by including flat blocks of color on top of his sketched line work. Shades of oranges and reds complement the rest of the palette of the work and creates a bright and saturated screenprint showcasing the grapes at the center.

Created in 1977, this work is a screenprint on Strathmore Bristol paper, hand signed by Andy Warhol in felt pen in the lower left.  Numbered from an edition of 50, aside from 10 Artist Proofs marked 'AP,' two Printer's Proof marked 'PP,' and one Hors Commerce marked 'HC.'
