Historical Description

Alexander Calder Alphabet et Saucisson, 1968 utilizes strong color contrasts and bold, black lines to create a playful piece that relays the impression of energy and movement. Whimsical shapes tilt and twirl about the composition in this playful work.  Calder utilizes a bold color palette in this lithograph, filling his shapes with rich reds, blues, and yellows. The bold, black lines delineating these shapes provide a stark contrast to these vibrant colors, and the white background provides an even sharper distinction, causing the shapes to pop out at the viewer.  The composition appears balanced, as if the figures, though different shapes and sizes, are strategically dispersed.  The shapes stand alone as their own entities, yet when viewed in the context of the entire composition, the figures and forms begin to adopt new identities, toying with the viewer’s sight and imagination.

This lithograph printed in colors on Rives paper is hand signed by Alexander Calder (1898 – 1976) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 90 in pencil in the lower left.
