Alexander Calder Untitled, 1962 is a warm and organic composition, ruled by a rich orange-red background, with a constellation of blooming black spots. The abstract visual field is simultaneously non-representational and evocative of various phenomena in nature. The striking effect of the black dots was achieved by leaving round areas, untouched by the heated orange pigment. Inside those areas, Calder dropped spots of black ink, the edges of which languidly melt, filling the round space they're in and crated a fascinating array of texture. There is something intriguing about the compositional choice to cluster the black spots at the lower left; it adds a dynamism to the work and captures the viewer's eye, while the rich textures pushed by Calder out of the seemingly simple medium of gouache and ink keep the viewer entirely enthralled. Though most famous for his 3D Mobile works, Calder proves that his unique vision and playful style extends just as strongly to 2D media, as showcased by this fascinating work on paper.
Created in 1962, this unique original gouache on paper is hand singed by Alexander Calder (Lawnton, 1898 – New York, 1976) and dated ’Calder 62' in black in the lower right.
