Alex Katz Dancer 1, 2019 is a beautiful silkscreen displaying an elegant dancer taking center stage on an inky black background. This work shows off Katz’s figurative style, with flattened shadows that give the dancer more of a two dimensional feel. Katz often chooses a single color for the background of his works, allowing the main figure to be the focus of the composition. The pale lavender of the dancer’s leotard and her warm skin tone pop in beautiful contrast to the dark black of the background. Katz created many works focusing on women, and his wife Ada inspired him to paint over 250 portraits of her likeness. Dancer 1 is part of a suite of three silkscreens, all focused on graceful ballerina dancers in different poses on black backgrounds. The black backgrounds around the figures mimics the feeling of the dancers being on stage, with their figures lit up by spotlights and their surroundings falling away to darkness. This work is a gorgeous example of Katz’s creative skill and talent and truly captivating to behold.
