Historical Description

Alex Katz 10:30AM , 2017 is a striking landscape scene in shades of green and grey. The landscape theme is a departure from the figurative artist’s body of work, but still is rendered with the same hand, and with the same point of view. Katz crops the image, an approach you will find in iconic portraits. Cropping abstracts the subject matter and also implies an almost cinematic perspective. This simplified framing of a landscape scene, allows the artist and viewer to greater appreciate the color and form from the environment. A wooded forest is trimmed of its tree tops and roots so that we only see the lush vegetation and stripes of tree trunks. Lime green is the dominant color of Katz 10:30AM, with paler green and dark moss hues shade and highlight the forest. The trees in the foreground are defined with crisp, sharp edges, but the grey trunks are smudged with blurred hints of white. Leaves sprinkle the moment in time like confetti, providing a subtle sense of depth, texture, and temporality.

The landscape theme, though distinctly different from his portraits, has been a fascination of the New York artist since the beginning of his career as a painter.
