Historical Description

Alex Katz Ada in Spain, 2018 is an intimate portrait of the artist’s wife, Ada del Moro Katz. The couple married in 1958 and Katz has since painted over 250 portraits of her. He was often inspired by female muses, painting other female figures, but by far his biggest inspiration is his wife. In this silkscreen, Katz paints Ada in side profile, allowing the viewer to focus on the rich brown of her shoulder-length hair against a bright leafy green background. Katz depicts his wife in all of her classy elegance, even in her sunglasses and tank top, she looks regal with her head held high. This work shows off all of the hallmarks of Katz’s artistic style, with bright saturated colors, flat blocks of color and limited shadowing. The close cropping of the composition creates an intimate feel to the portrait, as if the viewer is strolling around in Spain right next to Ada del Moro Katz herself. The image is clearly one taken from a personal moment in Katz’s life with his wife, and he translates this feeling effortlessly into the work itself.
