Historical Description

Perhaps one of the most triumphant and exuberant scenes of this series, the Assumption and Coronation combines both major events in the life of the Virgin Mary.  All attention is focused on her, flanked by both God the Father and Jesus who simultaneously crown her among the clouds.  It is almost a two-part composition, featuring both heaven and earth, angels and mortals.

According to W. Strauss (1980), “The myster of this event is emphasized by the fringe of clouds impinging on the somber terrestrial scene below and by the scale of tonal values: the bright heavenly assembly is placed on a gray middle tone, whereas the events on earth are pictured against a black background, the ultimate effect attainable in this medium” (p. 426) .

Created in 1510, this woodcut is monogrammed and dated in  woodblock ‘1510 AD ’ on the tomb in the lower left of the image. This work is a Meder (e) of (e) on fine laid paper with the Escutcheon (Coat of Arms) with Diagonal Beam (M 245, not in Briquet) watermark.
