Historical Description

A beautifully telling scene full of emotion and wonder, Dürer’s artistic mastery in the woodcut medium is on full display in this stunning work. Mary rests with Christ on her knees as he leafs through a book. Surrounding them is a beautiful garden of flowers and herbs with three rabbits at play in the foreground. Meanwhile Joseph stands at a respectful distance, gazing in wonder at the child, but Jesus has no eyes for the natural beauty and abundance that surrounds him as he looks into the book as if reading his own destiny.

Created c. 1496, this work is monogrammed by Albrecht Dürer (Nuremburg, 1471- Nuremburg, 1528) in the woodblock 'AD' in the lower center and is a Meder (i) of (i) impression.
