Historical Description

This touching work by Dürer has beautiful emotional depth, bringing a true visual understanding of faith, sorrow and solitude to life. The attention to detail in Albrecht Dürer The Death of the Virgin (The Life of the Virgin), 1510 is astounding as evidenced in the intricate engraving and fine twill-work on the Virgin's bed thus depicting Dürer's care and reverence in his portrayal of this bed of serenity, comfort and peace. The Men surrounding her in their state of mourning are each very distinct and purposefully set into this admirable scene of love and devotion.

Created in 1510, this woodcut monogrammed and dated by Albrecht Dürer (Nuremburg, 1471 - Nuremburg, 1528) in the woodblock ‘AD’ on the right bed leg in the center of the image and ‘1510’ on the left bed leg, is Meder (a) of (e) impression, after the Latin edition of 1511, dating this work to c. 1577.
