Historical Description of this artwork
Bursting with vibrant color, Leonardo Nierman painting Genesis is certainly captivating. Nierman did not begin his artistic career as a painter or visual artist, but rather as a violinist. For many years he pursued music very seriously, until, as the anecdote goes, he heard his own playing in a recording that decided that he had to stop. It was not long after this that Nierman began experimenting with painting. He found that painting in colors has the same rhythms and tonal shifts as music – but in a different medium. Nierman captures music, sound, rhythms, and emotion in his painting in new and exciting ways. The colors dance across the canvas with ebbs and flows just like the notes of a symphony.
Nierman Genesis encapsulates all of this. Rushing in from all directions are a veritable rainbow of colors from deep blues and purples, to fiery yellow, red and orange. Nierman uses a lot of black and white in his works in order to highlight his use of color. Genesis therefore has a dark, black background, but it is a colorful piece. The colors seem to drop from all edges and seep out of the shadows to fill the canvas with light. The inspiration that music had on Nierman’s work is clear when looking at Genesis – it is a musical piece where colors dive like notes and fill the air with melodies.

Leonardo Nierman Biography
Leonardo Nierman was born in Mexico City on November 1, 1932. As a child, he was convinced that music was his true calling and dedicated himself to studying the violin. However, after listening to a recording of himself playing in concert, he decided that he was not talented enough to pursue music and turned to art instead. Leonardo Nierman, on his artist site, states that music influenced his art greatly. He states, “Music and painting are very much alike – both have tonalities, rhythms, high-intensity areas, and resting areas.
Nierman first viewed art only as a hobby and continued to study business in school. He graduated from the Accounting School of the Autonomous University of Mexico with a Bachelors Degree in business in 1951, but soon after dedicated himself to painting. He is best known for his abstract landscape paintings, full of color and movement and often cosmic or terrestrial in nature. In 1972, he had a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and from that time on has had exhibition venues throughout the world including the United States, Italy, Israel, Australia, Spain and Japan.
