Historical Description of this artwork

Joan Miró Maravillas con Variaciones Acrósticas en El Jardín de Miró (Wonders with Aristocratic Variations in Mirós Garden), Plate 17, 1975 colorful lithograph executed in Mirós surrealist style. The color is joined by thick, black lines that curve and slash across the page. Repeating in the left, bottom, and right of the image are semicircles that bring a unity to the at times chaotic composition. The red lollypop shapes are also mirrors in some of the black lines, further joining the color and the black. Patches of color jump out at the viewer – the brilliant green in the upper left joined by the blue and the purple cloud in the center.

This lithograph is part of a series of 22 lithographs by Miró that illustrated Rafael Alberti’s book, Maravillas con Variaciones Acrósticas en El Jardín de Miró. The book was printed by La Polígrafa in Barcelona in 1975 and published by Ediciones Polígrafa S.A., Barcelona.

Created in 1975, this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right corner and is an artist proof annotated ‘HC’ (Hors de commerce) in pencil in the lower left, aside from the numbered edition of 75. Printed by La Polígrafa in Barcelona and published by Ediciones Polígrafa.
