DISCUSSION:
Created in 1968, this ceramic turned vase has been inscribed and stamped in
the base: 'Edition Picasso' and 'Madoura Plein Feu' with hand written, inscribed
text detailing the publisher and edition: 'Edition | Picasso | 2/500 | Madoura.'
It has been made using white, earthenware clay with engobe decoration under
a partial, brushed glaze and black patina with red, green, white, and black
coloration throughout.
This charming and delicate turned vase inhabits all the qualities unique to Pablo Picasso's limited uvre of ceramic works. Having been known for his series of owl ceramics, Wood Owl stands apart from the rest having the most painterly, detailed qualities of its natural counterpart: an owl with ruffled feathers and varying tones and highlights imitating its natural environment featuring the bright turquoise greens and teals and off-set by its deep brick reds and browns. With whimsical, engobe decoration, Picasso has incorporated traditional features of a vase and pitcher to create an owl's abstracted form. With the lip of the vase serving as the crown of its head, this Wood Owl is decoratively marked using alternating glazed and unglazed portions, creating a textured surface realistically rendered to feign the owl's feather coat. It is a stunning work only to be admired and appreciated in person as one can experience its full, three-dimensional effect by observing its features from all sides.
