DISCUSSION:
This delightfully charming ceramic vase is notable for it's wonderful large
scale, combined matte and glossy glazes, and signature playful primitive design
concepts.
Created in 1954, this ceramic turned vase was created from white earthenware clay. It was intricately decorated in engobes and paraffin, with boring-rod engraving on white enamel with black and beige. Numbered 9/300 on the bottom of the base, this work is engraved 'Edition Picasso Madoura' on the bottom of the base. Written onto the base is also the text.
Constructed with a slender vase opening and traditionally wide base, this is a very large scale Madoura ceramic, measuring 18.5" (46.99 cm) tall. The black, beige, and white decorate is truly exquisite. In this piece, Picasso has combined flat surface and incised decorative areas that create alternating areas of depth within the work. The matte and glossy glazes add the diverse decorative styles of the work. The simplified smiling figure is cheerful and imaginative, and it reflects Picasso's ongoing interest in twentieth century "primitivism," also understood as the reduction of form to its most basic, or primitive, state.
