DISCUSSION:
Brilliantly rich swirls of undulating yellows and oranges come together to create
a vibrant still life and portrait by Fernand Léger. A series of waved
lines, interlocking circles, and odd shapes are highlighted and contrasted against
alternating shades of black and white. The bright tones of yellow and orange
serve to represent the inherent movement felt within the piece which radiate
around the Tête de femme. She is instilled with an aura of mystery and
beauty, her expression carries an air of indifference while continuing to engage
the audience before her. This is an incredibly bright and colorful piece whose
charm and simplicity carries a unique appeal found only in Léger's stunning
series of works.
Created in 1954, this work was included in an album of 10 serigraphs printed by Jean Bruller and marked with his signature 'B' in the upper left. Based on an original watercolor, Tête de femme was part of a series was published in an edition of 200 by La Guilde Internationale de la Gravure and printed on Arches script watermarked paper. This particular work is numbered 190/200 in pencil in the lower left and signed by the artist in ink in the lower right; it is also signed in the screen with the artist's initials, 'F.L.' in the lower right.

ABOUT THE FRAMING:
Conservation framed with museum quality archival materials, this work is set
in a bright, Spanish-style frame. The organic sculptural quality of the moulding
is the perfect compliment to Léger's unique stroke with curved lines
and bold shapes. Furthermore, the details within the frame serve to accentuate
the fine color detail within the work as its moulding compliments the golds
and yellows of the piece. Completed with white, linen-wrapped mats and a matching
gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas cover.
