DISCUSSION:
Exhibiting the artist's use of mechanical and abstract imagery, this work is
full of active energy and simultaneous stability. The painterly texture of the
work and contrasting darks and lights, give this piece a sense of depth and
volume.
Created in 1948, this original color lithograph was printed by Mourlot, Paris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Printed on Arches paper with a Script watermark, this work is numbered 10/75 in the lower left. Signed by Leger in pencil in the lower right, this work is in excellent condition with a fine dark impression and full margins.
Filling the background in a vivid painterly blue with gradual transitions of tone, the blacks and whites of the images stand out in sharp contrast and capture the viewer's attention. An abstract image of scaffolding or a mechanical object, extends from the right across the middle of the page. Differing strongly from the hard-edged linear forms are three distinct amorphic shapes floating in the middle of the image. The dark shadows within the organic forms appear incongruent with the rest of the image, as though illustrating a window into another world. The solid black rectangle extending vertically along the left balances with the structure on the right and makes the organic forms stand out even more in sharp contrast as though floating on air.

ABOUT THE FRAMING:
Conservation framed with archival materials and museum quality, this work is

the deep blue of this work. The sculptural details of the framing enhance the
organic forms in this image. Completed with white linen wrapped mattes and a
matching gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas cover.
