DISCUSSION:
The Holy Kinship & Two Musical Angels are presented here in a stunning composition, making this one of Dürer's most passionate pieces.

Created in 1511, this is considered to be a Meder (c) impression, featuring the watermark of the Double Eagle with Flower with printing dating back to the late 16th century. The date is also engraved directly into the woodblock near the upper right. This piece is in good condition and features full borders.

This piece is striking as a portrait of the Holy Family, full of several other characters that make up the composition. What makes this particular work special, however, is its two whimsical cherubs seated at the feet of the Virgin as she nurses her child. They are holding musical instruments, a bagpipe and a lute, heralding in the celebration of this new family. The remaining characters are careful and attentive, providing added comfort and support to their new friends. The scene is set in a cozy, wooded atmosphere with the rolling landscape and clear sky visible in the background. Dürer has created an exquisite rendition of this lively and energetic work, full of movement and detail and evocative of a true Master Engraver.

The Holy Kinship & Two Musical Angels has received full archival treatment in its framing to insure the quality and longevity of the piece. It is encased in a Spanish-style black and gold frame with gilded detail inspired by floral motifs. Set in a closed-corner frame with matching gold inner fillet with white, linen-wrapped mats behind a Plexiglas cover.
