DISCUSSION:
Calder creates a quintessential work of complimentary figures in this charming
lithograph of Two Heads. With a sun on the left and a crescent moon on the right,
they are perfectly balanced and harmonious, reminiscent of the yin and the yang.
The vibrant red-orange of the sun and its rays contrast nicely with the robust black of the moon's profile. Their features become conjoined in the center to create a seemingly symmetrical composition echoing the famed ancient Chinese symbol of the Yin and Yang. As polar opposites, the sun is depicted with a beaming smile and a softened expression - the moon, in contrast, features an altogether different look, with a slight sneer and gaped teeth! Together, however, they play off each other well in terms of both composition and symbolism: the warm sun being cooled by the quenching moon, light balancing dark, and heat offset by the cold.
