Historical Description

Alexander Archipenko drawing, Untitled Study; Awkward yet intriguing, this study of a female figure is strongly defined with heavy pen strokes that exact a prefect use of line and rounded definition of form. The female figure is crouching on a knee, turned away from the artist with her hand behind her back, lending a sense of activity and motion to the work. Archipenko is best known for his sculptures, and perhaps this work was a study for one of them where he dissected the figure and turned it into one of his signature Cubist forms.

This pen and ink drawing, which is executed on a fine drawing paper, is hand-signed by Alexander Archipenko (Kiev, 1887 – New York,1964) in ink in the lower right.
