Historical Description

Arman Untitled (Burnt violin with bow), 2004; A pioneer of assemblage art, Arman transforms the objects of the ordinary world into high art with his expressive yet abstract deconstruction of the violin. In cast bronze, Arman composes this extraordinary sculpture to appear as if it is an actual violin that is split and burnt. Mimicking the appearance of scorched wood, the black patina fades quite beautifully into the deep bronze color. Despite this extraordinary realism, this multidimensional work of art is abstracted as its form is disrupted and fragmented from the classical instrument into something that new and exciting. A stunning, emblematic example of Arman’s depiction and manipulation of musical instruments, this impactful piece is best experienced in person.

Created in 2004, this cast bronze sculpture with green and black has the incised signature by Fernandez Arman  (Nice, 128 - New York, 2005) along the base of the sculpture. Numbered from the edition of 100 on the base, this work has the stamp of the foundry, Bocquel, France on the base.
