Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Exposition Vallauris, 1963 announces Picasso's exhibition focusing on one of the central aspects of the fair: bullfights. Elegant lines shape a stately bull, while quirky line work denotes the text, all coming together with an enhanced design that entices the viewer. The bull disappear upon a first glance, blending in with the letters. But if you look closely, the face of a bull appears. The eyes are on either side in the middle, and horns curve up around the word 'Vallauris'. The elements are simple - whimsical, blocked white font against a rich, brown background. Simply conceived, boldly executed, this poster is a wonderful example of Picasso's eloquent handling of linocut, a medium that other artists often find difficult and clumsy, but one in which Picasso excelled.

Created in 1963, this original linocut or linoleum cut is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Association des Potiers de Vallauris, this work is numbered from the edition of 170 and printed on wove paper.
