Historical Description

Expressing a sense of peacefulness and solitude, Marc Chagall The Buttercups, 1973 is full of detailed and active line work. The two figures on the left embrace with serene expressions on their faces, while a large bouquet rests behind them. The bouquet, brightly colored with orange, yellow, and green, sits in front of a window overlooking a sweeping cityscape of buildings and trees. The brightest swaths of color rest on the clothing of the woman, and in the blooming bouquet, endearing both with a wondrous breath of life. Chagall is a master with colors, and his vibrant blue and warmer colors pop off out of the image. The lyrical quality present in this piece reflects the masterful skill of Chagall as a storyteller as it is through his use of dreamlike imagery and bright, fluid colors that we as the viewer get swept away in his works.

Created in 1973, this color lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and is annotated 'epreuve d'artiste' (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the numbered edition of 50. Published by Maeght, Paris, this work is printed on japon nacré paper.
