Historical Description

The forms of black, blue and yellow mixed against the streaks and drops of greens and reds in this composition are the perfect representation of Francis’s fascination with shapes changing in space and time. Nothing ever stays the same as the world is in constant motion, and in this composition no two forms are the same as they seamlessly glide over the white canvas. A work full of energy and movement, yet suspended in time, Francis captures his own feelings of mortality and time, yearning to live longer than the time he knew he had.

Created in 1965, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Sam Francis (California, 1923- California, 1994) in pencil in the lower right and again on verso.
