Historical Description

In Henri Matisse La Robe Jaune au Ruban Noir (The Yellow Dress with Black Ribbon), 1922, Matisse creates a distinctive portrait of a young woman. Her lips are pursed and her head is slightly tilted and she sits, relaxed. Her clothes sit naturally on her body, a testament to Matisse's talent. She gazes at the artist, wearing a flouncy layered dress with a beautiful long ribbon. It lays on her shoulders and trails all the way down her dress, hanging long off the side of her lap. Next to her, the artist has included a pot of flowers which naturally emphasize her innocence and beauty. The flowers are placed miscellaneously, also imparting feelings of temper wildness onto the woman who looks so bluntly at the artist. This work is exceptional in its delicacy and is a striking reminder of Matisse’s beginnings as an artist prior to his iconic cut-outs.

Created in 1922, this lithograph on Chiné paper is hand signed by Henri Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, 1869 – Nice, 1954) in pen in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 50 in ink the lower right.
