Historical Description

Primary colors of blue, red and yellow are expressed in the form of rectangles, strokes, streaks and two drops of pink. As the canvas is cut in half by two contrasting block of color, each with a different scene inside, one understands the complexity and beauty of the work. The blocks appear separate but are connected, which is perhaps a reflection of Francis’s inner self being the yellow block, and his outward self being the red block. The pink blots make up the two halves of his heart, while the blue background would be his body as a whole, making for a truly engaging and intimate work. What is particularly unique however is that the work does not have Francis’s signature use of white space, making it a rarity in his oeuvre.

Created in 1984, this unique original monotype on handmade paper with raw pigments, inks, and oils is hand-signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right.
