Historical Description

The dynamic Talladega Three III artwork is an interpretation of Stella’s interest in the Talladega racing track, in which he visited in the 1970s. With swerving lines and layers of warm colors, Stella creates an illusion of emotions that could be found while visiting the Alabama destination. Using layers to craft the pictorial space, we are able to transcend beyond the flat surface and emerge within an extended vision of time and space. This monumental work was done by an innovated printing process that combined etched plates, wood blocks, and engraving elements that rivals its original related painting.

Created in 1988, this color etching relief is hand- signed and dated in pencil by Frank Stella (Massachusetts, 1936 - ) in the lower right of the image. Next to the signature, this work is numbered from the edition of 30 in pencil.  This piece is published by Tyler Graphics, New York.
