Historical Description

In Chagall Le jardin de Pomone (The Garden of Pomona), 1968, as multiple scenes unfold before us, we are transported to a mythical garden in Pomona with birds, nymphs, horse riders, and women. A colorful and lively work, Chagall based it on Pomone, one of the first French operas by Robert Cambert with a libretto by Pierre Perrin. The story goes that Vertumne is in love with Pomone and Pomone's nurse Beroé is in love with Vertumne. Vertumne assumes various disguises in his attempts to seduce Pomone: a dragon, Pluto, Bacchus. He only succeeds when he disguises himself as Beroé, because Pomone cannot refuse her old nurse a kiss. A complicated love story that Chagall magically reinterprets in this stunning composition that is full of expression and warm emotional imagery.

Created in 1968, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Annotated 'epreuve d'artiste' (artist's proof) in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the numbered edition of 50.
