Historical Description

Inspired by the poetry of French surrealist Louise Aragon, this lyrically illustrative work depicts a fantastic composition filled with mystery and symbolism. An opulent angel ascends above the human figures, drawn with an urgency and rashness. In this fragmented vision, disparate elements merge to create a dreamlike image, dispersed amongst floating faces that take shape between gestural markings and cool hues of blue and green. Evidence of Chagall’s unending imagination, this fantastic piece captivates for both its intriguing narrative and poetic beauty.

Created in 1976-1975, this color etching and aquatint is hand-signed in pencil by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in the lower right margin. Printed by Atelier Lacourière et Frélaut., Paris and published by Maeght, Paris, this work is numbered from the Roman numeral edition of IV in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the signed edition of 205 numbered in Arabic numerals.
