Historical Description

With an elegance of expression and simplicity of composition, Henry Moore sculpture Seated Mother and Child, 1977 captures the universal archetype of the maternal figure. Framed in a textured border of undulating bronze the polished forms of this tender figuring emerge. The soft curves of their bodies contrast with the rough texture of the metal they bore from, the mother showing expressions through the subtle gestures of her embrace. Graceful, organic shapes render this touching moment with the same sense of ease of the relationship between a mother and her child, their bond unfettered and unconditional.

Created in 1977 this cast bronze sculpture is this work is hand-inscribed "Moore" by Henry Moore (West Yorkshire, 1898 – Hertfordshire, 1986) on the left edge and numbered from the edition of nine on the edge, bearing the foundry stamp on reverse.
