Historical Description

A leaf rests on the sheet in Georges Braque Le Feuille Morte from Lettera Amorosa, 1963 as a testament to the beauty found in the cycle of nature. As gorgeous pink and brown tones wilt away, the leaf returns to the earth only to provide nutrients for the next flora that appears. The leaf and what is left behind are rendered in simple geometric shapes that create symmetry that is pleasing to the eye. Braque introduces texture to the lithograph with painterly strokes in brown and the slightly transparent pink leaf, through which we can see parts of the white background. It is detailed with thicker and bolder strokes of darker pink. Perhaps a metaphor that even though love may perish, there is new life waiting to bloom in its remains.

Created in 1963, this lithograph is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d’Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin. This work is an artist's proof annotated 'H.C.' (hors de commerce) in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the numbered edition of 75. It is one of 29 color lithographs created for the book by René Char entitled Lettera Amorosa. Published by Edwin Engelberts, Geneva, this edition was printed by Mourlot, Paris.
